The new Monster Drain

This is what it took to make the shower drain water tight. Beauty unfortunately was not an option. It's function only with this one.

Theme of the Week is the Shower Stall Drain Leak

The last few days I've been doing what I like doing most, making rooms look pretty. This time it's the corner room in the kitchen that houses the washer/dryer that got beautified. Peter on the other hand is not so lucky. Every evening he's been fixing the shower stall drain and with that an unusual amount of work gets dumped onto the bath tub, which might or might not walk out on us on its claw feet if it doesn't get its peace and quiet back soon; it's had a very busy winter.

The Shower Stall is Leaking

At the tender age of 10 months our shower stall begins to leak. Diagnosis: fatal cracks in the shower base due to a drain hole being misaligned with the drain pipe..., not my fault, but a certain plumber comes to mind. So we toss around some ideas for a temporary fix (to last until all the home remodeling is done and we can begin the next phase of home re-remodeling) and came up with an ingenious plan that involves cutting out a larger hole, Peter taking a dive through that hole, a metal plate and a giant tube of silicon.

New Master Bathroom Pictures -Acrylic Clawfoot Tub and Pedestal Sinks

The new Master Bathroom is finished, done, complete...to the detail. It's simple, fresh, open and with that spa feel. It's got two pedestal sinks, two wall mirrors with shelves, two shutter door wall cabinets, an acrylic clawfoot tub and corner shower stall, plus an inbuilt shelf next to the shower.

Painting a Bathroom Ceiling

Just flat ceiling paint over plaster doesn't do it in a bathroom and I kind of knew it but thought who knows perhaps it's fine. Well it wasn't. Paint started to lift here and there because of the moisture and it had to be addressed now. So I scraped the ceiling and Peter smoothed it all out with joint compound. I will use primer and be painting the bathroom ceiling with high gloss interior/exterior white paint. That'll be rock solid and withstand all the steam created from long hot showers.

New Bathroom Picture

The new bathroom is finished and ready to be furnished and decorated. A carpet is planned, wall cabinets for storage, a shelf for towels and a small table by the tub. And eventually new window coverings as well.

On how to Caulk a Shower Stall

I thought to caulk a shower stall was a no brainer... But since the second attempt failed and the caulk peeled right off again after taking a couple of showers(when the caulk came off the first time we thought that we hadn't let it cure enough), I realize that it requires some thinking or rather reading. Surface must be clean and rubbing alcohol is recommended, it says on the Kwik Seal Tube. Even a brand new shower stall needs cleaning before applying the caulk...This time around I will not only clean and clean some more but also use a Silicone Sealant, which should be stronger than the white Kwik Seal.

Wood Bathroom Floor Painted to my Satisfaction

I finished painting the wood floor in the new bathroom and am happy with the result now. It looks so much better with all the gaps showing and the new gloss paint in beige/gold color.

Bathroom Remodel -There shall be Lights

Electric boxes go in this weekend...and thanks to my (multi-)talented husband Peter we do not need an electrician for that.

Lowes and Home Depot are not the place to shop for Medicine Cabinets and Bathroom Vanity Mirrors

Last night was a trip for nothing. Lowes and Home Depot are a twenty five minutes drive and we were hoping to find the medicine cabinets and/or vanity bathroom mirrors for the new bathroom upstairs as well as the lighting fixtures. We could not find any cabinets or mirrors in solid wood. I also did not like any of the lighting fixtures. It has to be chrome and the selection was small. Brushed Nickel seems to be the trend.

Bathroom Remodel -Painting Wood Floor: Wood Filler looks like Grout

I am not happy how the wood floor in the new bathroom is turning out. The wood filler looks like grout and the rustic charm of the floor is gone when the gaps are filled. I still want to paint the floor but without the wood filler and in a much lighter color. This means to chisel out the wood filler...

New Bathroom Remodel Pedestal Sink Install

The New Bathroom Remodel is in full swing. Only the pedestal sinks don't go up without a fight. Faucet nuts were not included in the faucet kit we bought and some other issues which slipped my mind -I was busy recreating part of my website. Perhaps these other issues resulted in one sink still being rocky and the drain chrome rings not being flush on the wall. There is a tiny puddle around one of the water supply pipes for the tub too...Ed and Kevin will be back next Tuesday. I am very unsure about the dark brown paint color for this bathroom as well.

Painting the old Bathroom Wood Floor

It's a sauna on the second floor this afternoon and I thought we had wood filler but we don't, so my work in the new bathroom ends at 3PM -lucky me. This wood floor had been painted beige and I decided not the refinish it but to do paint too. Some nice durable latex floor paint..., to get around the tub will be a bit challenging though.

Sheetrock Install in new Bathroom

Put most of the sheetrock up and spread the first layer of joint compound. Then just after finishing the ones where the pedestal sinks go I thought: wouldn't it have been a good idea to measure the sink's exact location on the wall and add some stud pieces to ensure proper mounting? Also, I noticed a tiny bit of water around one of the water pipe fittings and told myself that it was nothing. It must be condensation or something. It turned out that the sinks are no problem and that there is a leak. So sheetrock down and plumbers back in.

New Plumbing

I always thought that plumbing was about water supply, well it is, but most of the work when re-plumbing a new bathroom goes into the vent pipes. The water pipes are a piece of cake so I hear. It has been two weeks now. The vents are done and I suspect that it is going to take at least three more days. I can't even imagine anymore what the bill will be. 65 an hour for one guy and 125 for two. In an old house you just don't know what your are getting yourself into and plumbing becomes an art form. I like our plumbers Ed and Kevin...and if your are in the Newport/Tiverton area I highly recommend them...
