Designing Walk In Closet Done Before and After Picture

After a few minor challenges the Walk in Closet is done. This room went from being an old pink bathroom to being a Closet that fits all our clothes and has just enough space to serve as a dressing room as well.

Designing Walk In Closet -Wire Shelving System, not so great

I thought the wire shelving system was a good idea for a small walk in closet, but unfortunately when I began to hang the clothes one of the shelves dislodged from the bar designed to hold it up..., or really more out -it seems to be designed to work under tension. I tied them down with picture hanging wire for now, but will replace them with something rock solid. I also concluded that I want the clothes to hang higher and then install drawers underneath.

Still Building and Designing that Walk In Closet

The dust part is over, walls are painted and I've tackled the carpet, and as I so often do I start a project, learn while doing, then redo. So I had the carpet all tucked under the treshhold and nailed down only to find out that it didn't roll out straight. Now it is in and glued down too and I can proceed installing the heater cover which I cleaned up and painted, the floor moldings and of course shelving. As far as designing the walk in closet goes, it's two 6' long shelves with hanger bar on each side so far. We definitely need some drawers, space for a laundry basket..., it will all answer itself once I start using the room.

Moldings for Walk In Closet

Today I cut and installed the crown moldings in the Walk in Closet, using some of the original molding pieces that I took down in the kitchen. And the paint will go on tomorrow -my favorite part.

Building a Walk in Closet -Sanding, Sanding

After more than two hours of sanding the joint compound on the walls the future Walk in Closet was covered with white dust and looked like a winter wonder land.

Building a Walk in Closet -Walls

To cover up new and old plumbing in the old ex-bathroom we installed a wall with plywood backing. This will make it easy to mount shelves. There are a few more smaller pieces of sheetrock left to install before I can start patching everything up. I also want to start thinking about the layout and design of the walk in closet. Once the Closet is done (in two weeks or so...) I can paint the last of the three bedrooms that serves currently as our closet and the upstairs will be completely done. And only two major projects remain: the kitchen where we have to install a new ceiling too, and the exterior -parking/driveway, stairway, landscaping.

Building a Walk in Closet

My current project: Building a Walk in Closet in the former old (and pink) bathroom upstairs that we gutted some time ago. There is one nasty window in there. I think its condition is the worst amongst all of the windows I cleaned up and restored. Well, this is for sure the last one. Not what you expect in a Walk in Closet but who knows we might appreciate some daylight in there...

Designing Walk In Closet

The old bathroom is now a clean slate and I can begin to install the walls and floor and designing the walk in closet. It's a small room (just a little bit more than 6 x 8 feet)but I think it will be large enough to hold all our clothes.

My part of the Bathroom Demolition is done

I have decided to leave the demolition of the iron cast tub to Peter and the removal of that nasty toilet drain and wax ring too...yesterday I got the plumbers to remove the toilet and carry it outside and today I took all the walls down and got rid of all the debris through the window. The old bathroom is now in the front yard. So my part of the bathroom demolition was done around 2PM. I took a stroll to Coastal Roasters and got myself a Chai Latte. The weather is great right now, very windy, lots of clouds and a dark blue sea...

Old Bathroom Demolition

Today I started the old bathroom demolition. I let Peter take a swing at the cast iron tub and the rest I can pretty much do by myself. Funny how demolition is so much fun. It's a lot of dust though since some of the plaster wall is coming down too. This room is going to be our walk in closet. I have to wait for Plumber Ed to come by and disconnect the sewage and the water before I can take the toilet and the shower out. After the bathroom demolition I can clean and refinish the hallway wood floor and stairway..., and the entire upstairs will be dust free.
